Pavilion Programme

Every Ramadan Pavilion is accompanied by a vibrant arts and cultural programme that is open to the public and woven into the story and theme of the structure. The Pavilion serves as a gathering place for individuals of diverse communities, faiths, cultures, and backgrounds to come together and connect. These will include working with community-based artists, educators, curators, and cultural organisations. Take a look below to see what’s on this Ramadan!

Eid at Ramadan Pavilion: Closing Words

When: 30th April, 4:30pm-5pm
Where: Ramadan Pavilion, Exhibition Road Courtyard, V&A South Kensington

Join us for one final address at Ramadan Pavilion 2023 before the structure comes down on May 2.

This Eid celebration is our final event at Ramadan Pavilion 2023. This day of celebration will conclude with words from some of the individuals in the driving seat of this Ramadan Tent Project activation.

Eid at Ramadan Pavilion: Breath & Heartbeat with Rumi’s Cave

When: 30th April, 2:30pm-4:30pm
Where: Ramadan Pavilion, Exhibition Road Courtyard, V&A South Kensington

This unique event combines drumming and storytelling to create a unique cultural experience.

Participants will have the opportunity to witness the traditional art of storytelling from Jumana Moon (BSL interpreted) while also engaging in the rhythmic beats of drumming and Zikr with Abdulla Mufa and the Dafzikr Drummers. This interactive event is perfect for those interested in exploring different cultures and learning about the significance of Breath & Heartbeat!

Spaces are free and no need to book.

Eid at Ramadan Pavilion: Numbi Arts presents Canab Cuud Dance Troupe  

When: 30th April, 1pm-2pm
Where: Ramadan Pavilion, Exhibition Road Courtyard, V&A South Kensington

Join the wonderful Hudda Khaireh, Project Manager at Numbi Arts, for an introduction to Canab Cuud and the Somali tradition of Buraanbur.

Canab Cuud is a buraanbur team that teaches and performs buraanbur. Buraanbur is a poetic form within traditional Somali poetry. This traditional Somali art form is often recited with drums and paired with a dance. When part taking in an event with buraanbur you are guaranteed to enjoy and learn more about Somalia’s culture.

Join us for Eid at the Pavilion!

For this hour, all participants must be registered participants who are willing to be photographed on film: Strike a pose & get snapped by Muslim Sisterhood co-founders, Lamisa and Zeinab.

Book your free spot, get dressed in your best and head down to our Ramadan Pavilion on Sunday.

Ramadan Pavilion at Friday Late: Sounding Futures

Workshop: Darbuka drumming with Louai Alhenawi

When: 28th April, 6:30pm-7pm and 7pm-7:30pm.
Where: Ramadan Pavilion, Exhibition Road Courtyard, V&A South Kensington

The Darbuka is a hand drum popular in Middle Eastern and North African music, Participants of all levels are welcome, and instruments will be provided. The workshop covers basic techniques such as holding the darbuka and producing sounds like “dum” & “tak”, as well as popular rhythms such as Baladi, Saiedi, Ayoub, laff and Haja. Participants will also learn how to accompany a melody. 

Free and open to anyone over the age of 10.
Anyone under the age of 16 bust be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Ramadan Pavilion at Friday Late: Sounding Futures

When: 28th April, 7:30pm
Where: Blavatnik Hall, V&A South Kensington

This unique musical feast organised by Yunus Emre Institute London in collaboration with Ramadan Tent Project and V&A Museum will feature an excellent Turkish bağlama (saz) player, composer, and performer, Ahmet Ozan Baysal.

Using his own unique interpretation with bağlama and voice, Baysal will forge a cultural bridge across Anatolia and beyond by playing traditional pieces from various regions including the Black Sea, Aegean regions, Central and Eastern Anatolia to the Balkans. By playing the rich and harmonious melodies from the Anatolian folk music culture, this concert will entice fans of traditional music while showing that experience of culture and our lived experiences are not bound by borders.

Join Ramadan Tent Project and Sisters in Business for a Networking Soirée at Ramadan Pavilion, V&A South Kensington. This is an exclusive afternoon of inspiration and connection at the stunning Ramadan Pavilion at V&A South Kensington on 27 April from 10am to 1pm

Sisters in Business will transform the magnificent V&A South Kensington into a hub of innovation and collaboration, exclusively designed for ambitious women like you!

Book Event: A Treasury Of A’ishah

When: 15th April, 2PM-4PM
Where: Ramadan Pavilion, Exhibition Road Courtyard, V&A South Kensington

Join us for an afternoon of reading and conversation with writer Dr Sofia Rehman, discussing her new book A Treasury of A’ishah with writer and producer Sabeena Akhtar. There will also be an opportunity to purchase books and have them signed by the author.

This event will be BSL interpreted.

Families Workshop: Zines With Printmaking!

When: 15th April, 10:30AM-4PM
Where: Art Studio, Learning Centre, V&A South Kensington

Join this free workshop with Khidr Collective to explore how to make a DIY zine! You’ll get to explore printmaking to create a front cover for your zine. Get inspired by people’s experiences and objects from the V&A’s collection to fill your zine with images and text celebrating Ramadan, belonging and joy!

There are two timeslots for families to book tickets, at 10:30-12:30 and 14:00-16:00.
Tickets are free, booking in advance is recommended.
This is an event for families to enjoy all together. No child can be left unattended.

Drop-in Design: Prints and Patterns

When: 14th April, 11AM-6PM
Where: Art Studio, Learning Centre. V&A South Kensington

Take part in this Families workshop with artist Alaa Alsaraji and Khidr Collective to celebrate Ramadan through printmaking! Design and print your own patterns inspired by objects from the V&A’s collection celebrating the Muslim month of fasting, belonging and joy.

Khidr Collective is a UK-based multidisciplinary arts collective which curates and platforms the work of Muslim artists. Since 2017, they have collaborated with writers, poets, illustrators, filmmakers, photographers and other creatives to produce the Khidr Collective Zine, an independent print publication showcasing work by Muslim artists. Khidr Collective Zine, Issue 5: Joy will be available from Summer 2023.

This event has been programmed in partnership with the V&A Families team.

This is a free, drop-in event for families to enjoy all together.
No child can be left unattended. Suitable for ages 5+.

Drop-in Design: Shapes and Structures

When: 12th April, 11AM-4PM
Where: Raphael Court, Room 48a. V&A South Kensington

Join the Art of Islamic Pattern to explore building 3D structures inspired by Islamic art and architecture. Work together as a family, to build creations from sticks and other materials to explore ideas behind Islamic patterns and how these patterns can be built into structures.

This event has been developed with the Families team at the V&A.

Amaliah Book Club: Ramadan Reflections

When: 8th April, 2-4PM
Where: Ramadan Pavilion, Exhibition Road Courtyard, V&A South Kensington

Join us this Ramadan as we reflect on the ways to develop and nurture our relationship with the Most Merciful, using Umm Raiyaan’s guided journal. The discussion of ‘Ramadan Reflections’ will be led by the author, Aliyah Umm Raiyaan, founder of Solace UK and host of Honest Tea Talk.

Come and connect with other Muslim women in a welcoming and familiar space to share your views and ideas on this journal. There’s a seat for you at our table!

Open Jummah

Join us for Friday prayers at the Ramadan Pavilion. The call to prayer will be made by Hassen Rasool, and will be BSL interpreted. Prayer mats will be provided but feel free to bring your own. The Pavilion is outdoors so please dress for the weather. All are welcome!
